[spoiler]I'm behind this, I came up with it on my 3rd re-read.
Additional info on it:
1) Every Chandrian has their sign. Kvothe's sign might be, as you say, the silence that permeates everything that surrounds him. There's speculation that each Chandrian's sign is more of a curse for that person than the people around them--in Kvothe's case, silence is the most torturous thing, because there is no music in silence.
2) We don't know much about the Chandrian, but if we can trust Skarpi's story about Lanre, we know that something happened to him when he tried and failed to raise Lyra. Skarpi said that Lanre was different--Selitos indicates that Lanre couldn't die, or at least he wouldn't stay dead. There also comes the implication that it's the "door of death" that is closed to him. If we expand on this, and say that, to the Chandrian, all of the doors to escape madness are permanently shut, we have more evidence for Kvothe being Chandrian--you see, we never, ever see Kvothe sleeping. We see him lying in bed staring at the ceiling once, when everyone else is asleep, but we never actually see him asleep. I think that we can assume that the door of sleep is closed to Kvothe. This would imply that the doors of death, madness, sleep, and forgetting are closed to both Kvothe and the other Chandrian.
3) The fact that Kvothe is "waiting to die" lines up with the above. If the door of death is closed to him, perhaps he wants to go through it to escape some immense pain that has befallen him. Perhaps he lost Denna, or by some sequence of events was forced to kill Sim, I don't know. But something traumatic has happened to him, and that may have led to him "giving up" some part of himself in order to get another person back--something that at least Lanre has done (which likely turned him into a Chandrian in the first place).
As an additional point, let us consider Haliax and the other Chandrian's end-game. Based on the above, which to be fair is based on a lot of conjecture (albeit conjecture that I firmly believe to be true), I submit that the goal of the Chandrian is to end the world, and with it their lives. Lanre, finding that he cannot be killed, even by Selitos, decided to end the world, because if there is no world, then there is no Lanre. Kvothe might not agree with the rest of the Chandrian in this goal--hence the reason that he isn't out and about plotting with the rest of the Chandrian. However, he cannot escape who or what he now is
